As a person's psychological fingerprint, their personality is their unique set of enduring thoughts, feelings and behaviours that define, guide and even predict how they interact with the world around them.
For thousands of years, philosophers have been fascinated by human nature and what makes each of us unique. In the late 19th century the study of personality moved from philospohy to science with early formal theory and psychoanalysis coming to the fore. In the early 20th century a distinct social-scientific discipline was established and individual differences, and cause and effect became the main drivers to understand personality and to try and explain how the complex interplay of our genetics and our environment shapes who we are.
The "OCEAN" test - also known as the Big Five personality test or Five-Factor Model - is touted as being the most scientifically validated psychological framework (including across cultures) to measure human personality. It evaluates where you fall on a continuum of each of the five foundational dimensions of human personality:
Openness - about your imagination, curiosity and willingness to try new things
High: typically creative and adventurous; curious about the world and others
Low: typically prefer routine, structure and predictability; resists new ideas; may struggle with abstract thinking
Conscientiousness - about your level of self-discipline, organisation, impulse control and behaviours directed by goals
High: typically diligent and dependable; mindful of details, is thoughtful and spends time preparing
Low: typically dislikes structure and schedules; procrastinates; more spontaneous and relaxed
Extraversion - about your sociability, emotional expressiveness and where you draw your energy from
High: typically friendly, outgoing and energised by social interactions and being around others; enjoys being the centre of attention; has a wide friends circle and finds it easy to make new friends; sometimes speaks before thinking
Low: (introverted) typically prefers solitude and quieter, more intimate environments; feels exhausted from socialisation; thinks about things carefully before speaking, dislikes making small talk
Agreeableness - about your capacity for prosocial behaviours like trust, empathy, cooperation, and kindness
High: typically cares about others, enjoys helping; is trusting, and eager to avoid conflict; wants to see others happy
Low: typically takes little interest in others, their problems or feelings; is more competitive, skeptical, or blunt; may manipulate others to get what they want
Neuroticism - about your emotional stability and reactivity to stress
High: typically more prone to anxiety, mood swings, negative emotions, irritability and sadness; gets upset easily; experiences a lot of stress and struggles to bounce back after stressful events
Low: typically does not worry much; is emotionally stable, resilient and calm; deals well with stress and rarely feels sad or depressed
